The most readily identifiable psychogenic gait impairment is astasia-abasia (Greek, inability to stand, inability to walk). In this disturbance, patients stagger, balance momentarily, and appear to be in great danger of falling; however, catching themselves at “the last moment” by grabbing hold of railings, furniture, and even the examiner, they never actually injure themselves ( Fig. 3.4 ).
