An academic term (or simply "term") is a portion of an academic year, the time during which an educational institution holds classes. When does academic term start in the US?
Colleges and universities in the United States all work on similar calendars, referred to as an Academic Year. Typically, schools start the new year in August or September and end in May or June. Most institutions of higher education in America choose to operate on semesters (two per academic year) while some use quarters (three per academic year). Is term and semester the same?
Term and semester are not strict synonyms. Term applies to any part the academic year is broken into, while semester strictly applies only to a bipartite system, with trimester (yes, the same as pregnant ladies have) for a tripartite and quadmester or quarter for a quadripartite system (such as Australian schools have).
