When we talk about the gauge of a needle we are referring to the size of the hole in the needle. The higher the gauge, the smaller the hole. The lower the gauge the wider the hole. The 21 gauge needle is the standard gauge needle for drawing blood. Most adults who are healthy have plump and bouncy veins.
What size syringe/needle is best?Needles that are 20 or 22 G and 1 or 1.5 inches in length are usually best. You also have to consider how much body fat the needle has to go through. A skinny person might be able to use an inch needle. Heavier people may need needles an inch and a half long.
What size needle is used for blood donation?Generally a 16 to 17 gauge needle is used at most plasma centers. There are always exceptions. Sometimes you will have a donor with particularly small veins and they may use a smaller needle (higher gauge). Plasma or whole blood donation 16 & 18 G is used.
