far·sight·ed·ness (fär′sī′tĭd-nĭs) The ability to see distant objects better than objects at close range. It is caused by the eye focusing incoming light behind the retina rather than directly on it. Also called hyperopia. Compare nearsightedness. The American Heritage® Student Science Dictionary, Second Edition.
What is the cause of nearsightedness or farsightedness?Though this condition may be caused by genetic malformations, the exact cause of nearsightedness varies by person. Farsightedness is caused by an abnormally shaped cornea or lens that’s typically the result of a shorter eyeball. This makes it difficult for light coming into the eye to focus directly on the cornea.
Which condition may cause farsightedness? Some people have refractive surgery. A flat cornea is one cause of farsightedness. You can also be farsighted if your eyeball is shorter than normal. This causes light to focus beyond your retina instead of on it. You’re more likely to be farsighted if your parents are.
