The ocean water column is made up of five zones: the sunlight zone (epipelagic), the twilight zone (mesopelagic), the midnight zone (bathypelagic), the abyssal zone (abyssopelagic) and the hadal zone (trenches). The upper layer of the ocean is known as the sunlit, or euphotic, zone. Sunlight zone (epipelagic): the upper layer of the ocean, where there is enough sunlight for photosynthesis. Twilight zone (mesopelagic): the zone where sunlight is too weak for photosynthesis. Midnight zone (bathypelagic): the zone where there is no sunlight. Abyssal zone (abyssopelagic): the zone where there is no sunlight and the water is very cold. Hadal zone (trenches): the deepest part of the ocean, found in trenches.
