WEBIn Eastern and Central Europe, this led to the synagogue being called a shul, the Yiddish word for school. When the Reform movement emerged as a lay movement in the first decade of the 19th century, the first “temple” was established in Hamburg, Germany. The use of the name “temple” was intentional.
